Traditional Piano Lessons: Reasons NOT To Take Them
Don't get me wrong, traditional piano lessons can be extremely useful for beginners and have helped thousands of people over the years, but so many of these pupils spend four years in a college learning to play piano music that other composers created. Why not create some music yourself? Compose your own melodies!
Too many piano students will sit at a piano with a piece of sheet music of a dead piano player in front of them, and their piano teacher telling them to play it correctly. What? What exactly does "play it correctly" mean? Of course, there are certain piano playing techniques that need to be played correctly, but as for the actual music, try putting your own style behind it it. Imagine a pupil who is going to school to be a writer or journalist or writer, and being told to copy someone elses writings exactly the same as the person originally wrote it. Is that correct? No, not in my opinion. Although a lot of people think it's creative, it's actually just copying someone elses work, so it's "re-creative."
The reason the music teachers do this is because they want the students to hear what they considered to be good music. It seems like only in classical music is there such arrogance.
I like all kinds of music from all kinds of artists, but I don't spend much time attempting to re-do what was already done. I would prefer to spend time connecting with myself and the music inside my mind will come out automatically.
I say, anybody can be creative and anybody can be composer. All that you need is the desire to do it. You must to actually want to express yourself through your music. This is what makes Beethoven's music so passionate.
It's as easy as puttin your your fingers on the piano keys and moving them to make sound. Use your own musical judgement, does the melody sound good to you? Of course it's only natural that most piano players want their music to appeal to other people also, otherwise you may not want to play it very loud (Ok, that was a joke). But seriously, be proud of the music you create if it makes you feel good. There is an endless supply of great piano music inside students all across Earth, just waiting to be played for other peoples ears.
