Upright (Vertical) Pianos

Upright pianos are also known as vertical pianos, and sometimes called studio pianos. They differ from Grand pianos in that the fram and strings are generally positioned vertically, and are more compact. For that reason, the upright more piano is more common in homes and smaller rooms.

An upright piano also lacks one feature that all grand pianos have, which is a special repetition lever in the playing action that catches the hammer close to the strings as long as the key remains depressed and enables a pianist to play repeated notes, staccato, and trills with more speed and control than they could on a vertical piano.

Some of todays best upright pianos can almost equal the same high quality sounds as many grand pianos. All of the top piano makers produce both Grand and Upright piano varieties, and it's hard to go wrong with one of the top name piano makers, regardless of which model you choose.
